Retort peel-off ends

Consumers want the convenience of heat-and-eat processed food products with easy-open lids. Typically these are metal bowls, however, thermoformed plastic containers are also used. Easy-open end manufacturers have developed retort peel-off ends for this market. Retort peel-off ends come in two categories: aluminum or tinplate rings. Both are seamed directly onto the package. Both offer the convenience of a peel-off metal membrane end and the added performance of being able to withstand high processing temperatures. Six-color lithographic printing allows for on-pack branding and promotional messaging.

Valved Ultra-seal
After roasting, coffee requires a holding period to “de-gas.” This process is time consuming and the prolonged exposure to oxygen compromises the coffee’s flavor.

In response, easy-open end manufacturers have developed a peelable membrane end with a valve that allows carbon dioxide gas to escape a sealed metal, plastic or rigid paper container without letting oxygen into the container. This type of end is called a Valved Ultra-seal end. Commercial in North America, the Valved Ultra-seal promotes better coffee flavor, delivers the convenience of a peelable membrane end, gives roasters the ability to seal the package immediately after filling, which speeds production times.

Because no vacuum packing is required, companies can down-gauge the can body and bottom and achieve higher filling speeds.

D-aperture peel-off ends

Conventional peel-off membrane ends are round. The D-aperture peel-off end has a “D” or half-circle shaped opening with a flat edge. It serves as a leveling feature for measuring powdered products like infant formula, beverages and spices.
